whippeter69 88
A question sent in to sporting shooter. Q. I have a 3 shot semi-automatic gun and have been invited on a pheasant day. Can I use ir or should i use a different gun? A. Neville Grill replies. You shouldn't take a semi-automatic on a driven day for a number of reasons. The first is that most of the other guns will only have two barrels and thus two chances at a bird. You, however, would potentially have three shots, so your fellow guns might feel you should pay 50% more!. Secondly, when not on your peg its important to be able to show to guns and beaters that the gun is unloaded, which hard to achieve with a semi-auto. And, for an occasion where etiquette and tradition are important, it's simply not 'done'. What do you think about this answer? Edited December 23, 2009 by whippeter69 Quote Link to post

rizla1 122
should be able to take what ever gun you want to a shoot if your paying to do so,as for paying 50% more is abit of a cheek you only shoot at the amount of birds that fly over you, and the way to show that your semmi is unloaded is to pull the action back half way and put a empty cartridge in sidewards and jam it in with half sticking out the side so that everyone can see it Quote Link to post
watchman 256
rubbish, its all about having a bit of etiquette mate Edited December 23, 2009 by watchman Quote Link to post
blackfox 9
Im sorry mate but id have to agree with that.... To me it would be like turning up to shoot wearing jeans & T-shirt, if its rough shooting thats fine but i would never take a semi-auto on a driven formal day. Also do notice that he/she has been invited, thus comments may be made about the decision to bring this guest on bord. I.e not make a very good first impression and also its not very sporting... Thats my take on it anyway, im going on a driven shoot on new years..... with a O/U. Sam Quote Link to post

And, for an occasion where etiquette and tradition are important, it's simply not 'done'. What do you think about this answer? Their argument is flawed: 1. You could agree to only load your semi-auto with two shots...that makes it fair! 2. You can easily buy one of those flag 'things' to stick in the breech.... then all will know it is unloaded! 3. Etiquette and tradition are important but so is survival of business, given the present economic freefall I don't imagine all shoots have the luxury about refusing peoples cash for the sake of tradition. This is only my opinion.....if people can't move with the times then they get left behind ....basic evolution.! Quote Link to post
mattydski 560
When I am fortunate and lucky enough to be invited to shoot someone's birds............I respect their wishes and the general ethos surrounding their shoot. Quite frankly if I was invited on the condition I wore a pink bow tie and yellow breeks...........I would oblige!! hope that helps Why don't you like his answer, you asked for his opinion, unfortunately if differs from what you wanted to hear??? Seems you didn't want his opinion after all!! Quote Link to post

dogs-n-natives 1,182
I only use a semi-auto nowadays... as i cant be arsed keeping loads of guns, one for every job... just got the one shotgun, a five shot. And if im going to get turned away from a day for having it, then id rather not be there to be honest. Mine has a sling, so it goes over the shoulder when not in use, and the breech will have a cartridge jammed in like Rizla said, so its easy to see that its not loaded. This year ive shot partridge and grouse so far and never had any bother off the snotties ...I only ever have 2 cartridges in at a time though LOL Quote Link to post

If the shoot insisted on tradition then I would concede that you should oblige......and use it as a great opportunity to explain to the wife you have to go and buy another shotgun ! I suppose, if the shoot previously insisted upon traditional shotguns only, i would oblige...but begrudgingly! Quote Link to post
